How to Stay Safe when Using the ATM

By Lauren Romano, published Jul 24, 2008

Using the ATM is a convenience that many of us use. However, there are also many of us, myself included, that have somewhat developed a false sense of security and a big comfort level when we pay a visit to the ATM. Make sure that you protect yourself when going to the ATM by practicing some of these safety tips.

Make sure that someone stands far enough away from you when you are doing your transaction. While many of the people that are standing close to you are simply those that have no concept of giving someone space when they are doing something personal, there are some that are trying to read your card information and see what information you are punching into the ATM. Don't hesitate to either wait and let that person go ahead of you or ask the person to back up a bit.

Check for any little devices that could be attached to the card slot. Take a close look, some devices that people use to steal your information aren't so obvious at first glance. This act, called skimming, can steal your information right off of your ATM card.

Use bank ATM's instead of ATM's located at other places. Since bank ATM's are much closely monitored then most other ATM's, thieves are more reluctant to use the ones located at banks.

Avoid using ATM's that are hidden and/or in a dark area. You're much more susceptible to someone trying to harm you if they know that no one can see them. If possible, make an effort to get your ATM transactions done during the day instead of when it gets dark out.

Don't waste time by digging around in your purse, wallet or pockets for your ATM card. You give someone else ample opportunity to come up behind you while you're distracted. Make sure to take your card out ahead of time and have it ready for use.

Be aware of what's going on around you and trust your instincts. If you see a suspicious person hanging around the ATM or hanging around the bank, don't use it. Getting out a few dollars isn't worth the risk. Head to another ATM instead. Also, if you get a gut feeling that something isn't right, then go with your gut and get out of there.
