Peugeot THP engineThe 1.6 litre THP 150 bhp (Turbo High Pressure) 16v engine (launched on 207) launched a new family of petrol engines, the result of the co-operation between the PSA Peugeot Citroën and BMW Group. The aim of this partnership is to develop petrol engines which are equipped with innovative technologies that offer high levels of performance, with low fuel consumption at the same time as meeting the cost constraints imposed in the lower and lower-medium vehicle market segments.
Each partner has contributed the best of their skill and expertise, whether it be in engine design or in manufacturing processes. The engine is produced at the PSA Peugeot Citroën factory in
The 1.6 litre THP engine has a sixteen valve cylinder head with two overhead camshafts and 4 cylinders displacing 1598 cc. It produces a maximum power output of 110 kW (150 bhp) at 5800 rpm.
The choice of a 4-cylinder 1.6 litre engine was made because small turbocharged engines with a high specific power output, offer a significant advantage in terms of fuel consumption over normally aspirated engines with a larger displacement. This downsizing strategy is also in line with Peugeot's HDi diesel engine strategy.
This new petrol engine uses very innovative technology and is capable of making the 207, for instance, as dynamic and enjoyable to drive as a car with a larger engine.
Its performance is evidence of this as with just the driver on board, it only takes 29.4s to cover the standing start 1,000 m and accelerates from 80 to 120 km/h in 5th gear takes only 8.2 s (in comparison, the 206 S16, despite a weight advantage, took 10.1 s). The maximum speed of 210 km/h is reached in 5th gear. The innovative technology used in this engine and the high torque output available at low engine speeds, helps reduce the fuel consumption to (7.0 l /100 km in the combined cycle compared with 7.7 l /100 km for the 206 S16) and makes it possible to reduce the CO2 emissions (166 g/km compared with 185 g/km for the 206 S16).
Fuel Consumption To Only 7.01 litres per 100 km RM2.70 x 7.01 lit = RM18.927 / 100km = RM0.18927/km
The THP range:
1.6l THP 150 bhp available on 207 and 308,
1.6l THP 175 bhp available on 207 RC,
1.6l THP 140 bhp with « Tiptronic System Porsche » automatic gearbox available on 308.
Peugeot VTI engine
Both VTi engines, the 1.6l (120 bhp) and the 1.4l (95 bhp), are the result of the co-operation between the PSA Peugeot Citroën and BMW Group as well.
The 1.6l VTi 120 bhp (Variable Valve Lift and Timing injection), launched on the 207, is an indirect injection naturally aspirated engine developing a maximum power of 88 kW (≈ 120 bhp) at 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 160 Nm at 4250 rpm.
This torque is available very uniformly, since even at low engine speeds (2,000 rpm), it attains 140 Nm, or 88 % of its maximum capacity, thereby ensuring a wide operating range. This engine’s technology, very different from that of the 1.6 THP despite the large number of common components, is a genuine first at this level of engine capacity. In addition to its variable timing system for the inlet and exhaust camshafts, a variable lift system on the inlet valves allows their maximum stroke to be adjusted gradually according to the position of the accelerator pedal.
The use of these two VVT systems (Variable Valve Timing or continuously variable timing) combined with the variable inlet valve lift system makes it possible, to improve the thermodynamic efficiency of the engine (developed from the BMW Group’s VALVETRONIC concept). This then significantly reduce the fuel consumption (particularly in partial load conditions), and therefore CO2 emissions, but also improves engine response and flexibility.
This engine thus provides the 308 for instance with good level of dynamic performance while reducing fuel consumption to only 6.7 litres per 100 km in the combined cycle (i.e. a gain of more than 10 % compared to a 307 equipped with the old 1.6 litre 110 bhp engine).
Fuel Consumption To Only 6.7 litres per 100 km RM2.70 x 6.7 lit = RM18.09 / 100km = RM0.1809/km
VTi range:
1.6l VTi 120 bhp available on 207 and on 308,
1.4l VTi 95 bhp available on 207 and on 308.
